Ben Kerr runs his own MMA club, Rebel Alliance Mixed Martial Arts (RAMMA)
RAMMA has been established since 2017 but our roots lie deeper as RAMMA is a continuation of our decade (2007-2016) as DGMMA.
The name Rebel Alliance was born of a love of the pop culture sci-fi films and a turning point for us leaving a tired, unsupportive space and relocating to our new home The Hangar HPC. The coaching staff have remained the same and we have gained an “Alliance” of new coaches, equipment, and personnel too.
RAMMA
RAMMA has an open door policy for anyone willing to show respect to all members and caters for first timers right through to professional athletes. All genders, sexuality, religion, race and ethnicity is welcomed and all coaches, peers and staff will do our best to make everyone feel welcome and part of our team. Jovial “locker room” humour and rugby club team morale is ever present on the mats, as many here in South Wales have brought that mentality to our club. But as with all martial arts, respect is always our anchoring discipline.
A typical class focuses on an element, a concept or skill, within the Mixed Martial arts arena. Drawing from all martial arts and combat sports, not specialising in one area. More specialised training is available on The Hangar timetable.
This is a class not a fight and you should therefore learn and improve in a safe environment. Leading onto safety, this is a contact sport and due to the multiple component variables injuries can happen but to protect yourself, gum shields, groin guards are advised (can be purchased on the main desk) and padding of hands and shins for sparring is mandatory. If you feel uncomfortable with any positions or teaching you cannot and will not be forced to partake.
Teaching will be visual, audible and kinetic, and more experienced members will be encouraged to help less experienced members of the class. All whilst listening to whatever the iPod shuffle selects!
Fitness is a tool to be able to train harder and compete harder more efficiently and will aid to your safety. The Hangar HPC has everything you need to be sufficiently fit for purpose, but RAMMA also promotes fitness and will build your fitness whatever your level. Quantifiable drills that will highlight your level and allow you to see your own progression.
Nobody will be ridiculed for a low level of fitness, quite the contrary as you will be applauded for your taking measures to improve. You don’t have to be fit to take part, you will get fit by taking part!
As a team we run regularly before class and our social media page allows all members to join each other in extra curricular fitness.
In closing, watch the sport, be aware of what you are taking part in. Not everyone will be a UFC star but not every Sunday league footballer will make the World Cup, there are levels to this sport for everyone and personal gains that everyone can benefit from. We as a team have won 3 titles so far this year and intend to win more before the year is out. Our fight team competes regularly at all levels of combat sports and has a fantastic reputation with all promotions we work with including UFC and Belator coaches, referees, and fighters.
Give it a go!
